Interventional radiology (IR) is an image-guided, ultra-minimally invasive surgical subspecialty of radiology. IR procedures typically eliminate the need for large incisions, decrease pain and shorten recovery times relative to traditional surgical procedures, and address problems from head to toe. In IR, there is a focus on diagnosing, treating, and curing many conditions.
Patients may be referred to IR for treatment of blocked, diseased, or damaged blood vessels; fixing complex gastrointestinal or genitourinary problems; treating various types of cancer; helping achieve pain control for certain conditions; optimizing performance of dialysis fistulas and catheters; performing difficult biopsies and fluid drainages; placing certain medical implants; and many other medical issues. Patients may also be emergently referred to IR for treatment of life-threatening blood clots, bleeding, and infection.
While interventional procedures are chosen as an alternative to surgery, you should be prepared for some similarities with conventional surgery. Some procedures require an office visit and physical examination by an IR physician before your procedure is scheduled. Patients are often sedated for procedures. You will be treated in a special procedural suite similar to a surgical OR and monitored afterwards in a post-procedural recovery unit. Certain medications such as blood thinners must be held prior to IR procedures. As with surgery, IR procedures have risks, side effects, and complications; these will be discussed with you before you are asked to sign a consent form.
As a patient in IR, you will be receiving care at the cutting edge of medicine. We look forward to serving you.
